Being able to borrow Dad's lenses and down the road share more lenses and accessories is worth loads. The D40/D3000 are not THAT different from the XS or XSi so no worries. Happy shooting! I really can't decide Nikon or Canon. My father has a Canon XTi, as well as 3 lens for it. The Nikon D40 (and now D3000) seems to be a really nice option. If I got a Nikon, I would have to buy all new lenses for it, which is very cost consuming.
